Welsh Cob

The Welsh cob is the powerful Section D of the Welsh Pony and Cob family, developed in Wales as an all-purpose riding, driving, farm, and military horse. It keeps the native pony's hardiness but adds more size, depth, and carrying power, with no upper height limit in many registries. A good Welsh cob has a broad forehead, bold eye, short strong back, deep body, muscular quarters, and an active trot with the knees and hocks clearly engaged. Traditional colors include bay, black, chestnut, and grey, while pinto patterns are not accepted in the main Welsh registries.

In human hands, Welsh cobs can be family mounts, competitive driving horses, show animals, hunters, dressage partners, and sturdy trail horses. Their strength and confidence make early handling and consistent boundaries important, especially before they learn to use their power against the handler. Many are efficient doers, so lush pasture, high-calorie feeds, and long breaks from work can lead to obesity or laminitis. Breeders pay close attention to Welsh type, free movement, limb correctness, temperament, and height. A buyer should look for a cob whose training matches its job, because a green Section D is a very different proposition from a seasoned schoolmaster.
