Fjord Horse
The Fjord horse is a Norwegian breed recognized by its dun coat, primitive markings, sturdy body, and upright mane often clipped to reveal the dark center stripe. It is a small but powerful northern horse, sometimes pony-sized, yet able to carry and pull with surprising strength. Its history includes farm work, mountain travel, packing, riding, and driving in western Norway's demanding terrain.
Fjord horses are kept for driving, therapeutic riding, trail work, family riding, and small-farm jobs because many combine strength with a steady nature. They are also clever and can become pushy if handled casually, so manners and consistent training matter. Easy-keeping tendencies mean rich pasture and excess concentrates should be managed carefully. Breeders usually protect the dun color range, good feet, and calm working mind, while owners should remember that a Fjord is a real working horse, not a decorative novelty.
