Welsummer
Welsummer is a Dutch chicken breed from the village of Welsum, bred around rich brown eggs and a classic red-partridge appearance in the most familiar variety. It is a medium, active farm chicken with a practical background in eggs, meat, and hardy small-flock use. The breed gained a wide following because it combined useful production with an attractive, natural-looking color pattern that fits both exhibition pens and ordinary farmyards.
In management, Welsummers do well with dry housing, regular range or exercise space, and feed that supports laying without pushing them like commercial hybrids. Their brown eggs are a major selling point, but shell color can vary, so breeders should record egg shade and not rely on breed name alone. Good breeding stock should have sound legs, clear pattern, calm but alert temperament, and steady productivity. For buyers, Welsummers are often a sensible heritage choice when the goal is attractive birds with useful eggs and manageable flock behavior.
