Sumatra
The Sumatra is an ornamental game-type chicken with origins linked to the Indonesian island of Sumatra. It has glossy dark plumage, a long flowing tail, pheasant-like carriage, and, in some males, multiple spurs. Although it has gamefowl ancestry, the modern breed is often kept for exhibition and historical interest rather than for utility egg production.
Sumatras are active, agile birds that need secure pens, good perches, and space that protects long tails from damage. Males may be assertive, so flock structure should be planned carefully. Breeders select for sheen, tail length and carriage, body type, spur traits where valued, fertility, and temperament. Hens can be seasonal layers and may show broody instincts. The breed rewards careful handling but is usually not the easiest choice for a crowded mixed backyard flock.
