Sulmtaler
The Sulmtaler is an Austrian dual-purpose chicken from the Sulm valley region, developed as a farm bird for meat and eggs. It has a solid body, useful table qualities, and often a small crest or tufted head appearance, with wheaten and related color forms especially familiar. The breed has more traditional farm character than a commercial broiler while still carrying enough substance for household meat.
Sulmtalers need roomy housing, outdoor access, and feed that supports steady growth without pushing them into excessive weight. Breeders should select for body depth, fertility, laying, correct color, crest quality where required, and calm handling. Because the breed has conservation importance, flock records and thoughtful pairing matter. It can suit small farms wanting a traditional European dual-purpose chicken, provided expectations are realistic about growth speed.
