Ostfriesische Mowen
The Ostfriesische Möwen, also known as the East Frisian Gull, is a rare and distinctive chicken breed that hails from the coastal regions of East Frisia in northern Germany. Revered for its hardiness and adaptability to the rugged, windy conditions of its native habitat, this breed is particularly well-suited to free-range farming systems. The Ostfriesische Möwen displays a striking appearance with its medium-sized body, sleek silver-white plumage, and a uniquely patterned neck that resembles the noble look of a seagull—hence its name. Their yellow legs and contrasting large red combs add to their visual appeal.
Aside from their aesthetic qualities, these chickens are valued for their excellent egg-laying capabilities, producing a substantial number of medium-sized, cream-colored eggs annually. Their calm and friendly disposition makes them a favorite among both hobbyists and small-scale farmers, as they integrate well with other livestock while maintaining peace in a mixed flock. Unfortunately, due to their limited numbers and historical significance, the Ostfriesische Möwen is listed as a conservation breed, with ongoing efforts to preserve its lineage and ensure its survival for future generations.
