Combattant de Liège
Combattant de Liege, often called the Liege Fighter or Luikse Vechter, is one of Belgium's large game chicken breeds. It is associated with the Liege region and has an imposing upright body, long legs, firm muscling, and a bold gamefowl outline. Compared with ordinary dual-purpose chickens, it is taller, harder feathered, and more specialized in type, reflecting its history before present-day exhibition and preservation use.
Owners who keep Liege Fighters usually do so as experienced poultry breeders rather than casual egg flock keepers. The birds benefit from spacious runs, sturdy perches placed with leg safety in mind, and housing that keeps large males separated when needed. Selection should emphasize balance and structural soundness, because extreme height without strong feet, hocks, and body condition can make the bird difficult to manage well. Breeders should also maintain fertility, calm handling where possible, and a clear record of the line because rare game breeds can be diluted quickly by casual crossing.
