Australorp
The Australorp is an Australian dual-purpose chicken developed from Black Orpington ancestry and selected strongly for egg laying while retaining a broad farm body. Early twentieth-century laying trials gave the breed an international reputation for production, especially in black birds with a green sheen. Some standards also recognize blue or white, but the typical Australorp remains a solid, rounded chicken with a calm, workmanlike presence and brown eggs.
Australorps are common in backyard and small-farm flocks because they can combine steady egg output with enough size for a practical table bird. They need secure housing, shade in hot weather, and feed that supports laying without making heavy birds overfat. Breeders should look at active movement, body depth, strong legs, fertility, and egg performance, not just glossy feather color. Hatchery lines may differ from exhibition lines, so buyers should decide whether they need household layers, show birds, or a balanced flock.
