Sokoke
Sokoke cats are associated with coastal Kenya, especially the Arabuko Sokoke area, and have a lean athletic build with a blotched tabby pattern often described as wood-grain or African tabby. The breed developed from local cats rather than from a long-established closed fancy breed, so preservation history and import lines matter. Brown tabby patterning is central to the recognizable Sokoke appearance, but pattern alone does not define the breed.
Sokokes are rare enough that responsible breeding depends on accurate records and careful placement. Owners should expect an agile, intelligent shorthaired cat that benefits from climbing space, interactive play, and calm handling rather than heavy grooming. Breeders and preservation groups need to protect type and genetic health without turning every similar tabby into a Sokoke. For buyers, origin, pedigree, and breeder transparency are more meaningful than coat pattern by itself. The breed's rarity also makes casual outcross claims worth checking carefully.
