The Persian is one of the best-known longhaired cat breeds, associated with a dense flowing coat, round head, large eyes, short body, and calm expression. Its modern form was shaped heavily by the cat fancy in Europe and North America, though the name points back to longhaired cats historically linked with Persia and nearby regions. Persian type varies from traditional doll-face cats to flatter-faced show lines, and colors range from solids and silvers to tabbies, smokes, calicos, bicolors, and pointed Himalayan divisions.
Persian care is a daily commitment. The coat needs regular combing down to the skin, and many cats need help keeping the face, eyes, and rear coat clean. Flatter-faced Persians require special attention to breathing comfort, heat, dental alignment, and tear staining. Responsible breeders commonly screen for polycystic kidney disease and discuss how face type affects welfare.
