Norwegian Forest Cat
The Norwegian Forest Cat is a natural Scandinavian breed built for cold weather, with a strong body, long legs, triangular head, and thick double coat. Its water-shedding topcoat, woolly undercoat, full ruff, and bushy tail give it a practical forest-cat look without needing wild ancestry. The breed is known in Norway as the skogkatt, and it appears in many colors and patterns. Mature cats are substantial but should remain athletic rather than simply heavy.
Seasonal coat changes shape much of the household routine. The winter coat can be heavy, then shed hard as temperatures shift, so the belly, ruff, and hindquarters need regular combing before mats form. Norwegian Forest Cats usually enjoy climbing spaces and room to move, alongside normal domestic routines, dental care, and measured feeding. Responsible breeding programs may include screening for glycogen storage disease type IV and other line concerns. Size, coat, and strength should come with a balanced, functional body.
