Plateau
The plateau yak is a broad name for domestic yaks of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and neighboring highlands. In some contexts it refers generally to ordinary plateau herds; in others it may point to a specific regional population such as the Qinghai Plateau yak. These animals show the classic yak form: compact body, deep chest, long hair along the sides and belly, a woolly undercoat, and a tail more like a horse's than a cow's. Black and dark brown are common, with white or golden-patterned animals present in some managed herds.
Because the label can be broad, buyers should ask what plateau means in a particular herd: geography, registry category, color group, or simply highland yak type. Practical care is the same as for other cold-adapted yaks. Summer shade and dry footing matter, and animals moved into wetter climates may need closer parasite monitoring. Plateau yaks are useful for meat, fiber, packing, brush control, and small-scale dairy use, while their core value remains efficient grazing on sparse high-country forage.
