Anery
An anery reticulated python is a captive morph selected for reduced warm pigment, producing a cooler palette than the normal gold, black, and brown retic. The name comes from anerythristic, meaning red pigment is reduced or absent, although expression in reticulated pythons can vary by line and by other genes in the animal. Many anery retics appear smoky gray, silver, charcoal, or black-and-white, with the familiar reticulated pattern still visible unless another pattern morph is involved. It is a morph label within Python reticulatus, not a subspecies or size category.
Care expectations should be based on the snake's background, not the gray coloration. A full-sized reticulated python can become an extremely large, strong constrictor, while dwarf and super-dwarf lines need accurate ancestry rather than assumptions. Routine management includes escape-proof adult housing, warm basking access, consistent humidity, fresh water, and calm handling by people who can read snake behavior. For breeding, documenting the anery line and any hidden genes helps prevent confusion when similar-looking dark or axanthic-type combinations are produced.
