Syrian Dewlap
The Syrian dewlap is a Middle Eastern fancy pigeon breed descended from the rock pigeon, Columba livia. It is part of the dewlap or wamme group, named for the pronounced fullness under the throat and along the crop, and is kept for type, carriage, and traditional color varieties. Black, blue-bar, red, and yellow birds are commonly listed, though exact expectations can differ among national standards and local Syrian breeders.
These pigeons do best in a calm, dry loft where neck and breast feathering is not constantly rubbed by tight nest boxes or narrow traps. They are usually managed as exhibition or heritage birds, so size should not be the only selection goal; better stock breathes clearly, has normal crop function, and raises squabs without losing the clean throat outline. Imported or rare-family birds deserve quarantine and careful record keeping, especially where only a few unrelated breeding pairs are available.
