Fantail
The Fantail is an ornamental pigeon breed group recognized by a broad, upright fan of tail feathers and a compact, poised body. Different strains, including English and Indian types, vary in posture, cresting, foot feathering, and tail carriage. The central feature is the tail display, which gives the bird a very different outline from ordinary flying pigeons.
Fantails need housing that protects tail feathers from mud, crowding, and broken perches. They should have clean bathing water, dry floors, and calm handling, especially before shows. Breeders should select for tail spread, balance, fertility, and normal movement, because extreme carriage can interfere with mating or comfort. Buyers should identify the specific fantail type they want, since care and show expectations differ between smooth-headed, crested, clean-legged, and muffed forms.
