Altenburg Trumpeter
The Altenburg Trumpeter is a German trumpeter pigeon associated with Altenburg and bred for both appearance and its characteristic vocal style. Trumpeter pigeons are named for their unusual cooing or drumming voice, and many also carry ornamental features such as crests, muffs, or heavy feathering depending on the breed. The Altenburg type is part of that long central European fancy tradition.
Keepers should provide Altenburg Trumpeters with clean, dry lofts and room for their ornamental feathering if present. Breeding selection includes voice, type, feather quality, fertility, and the ability to rear young reliably. Birds kept for show need regular bathing and protection from mud or broken feathers. Because trumpet sound can vary between individuals, experienced breeders listen as well as look when choosing pairs.
