Black

The black gerbil is a domestic color variety of the Mongolian gerbil, not a distinct breed. A good black has a dense, even black coat with dark eyes, although small white marks on the chin, feet, or tail tip can appear in some lines. Pied and spotted black gerbils show the same dark base color broken by white patches. Genetically, black is commonly associated with the non-agouti pattern, which removes the wild gerbil's banded golden hairs and produces a solid dark coat.

Black gerbils suit the same husbandry as other Mongolian gerbils. They do best in pairs or compatible small groups, usually established before adulthood, and need a secure tank or gerbilarium with deep digging substrate rather than a shallow cage. A plain gerbil mix or lab block, limited treats, fresh water, and regular chew material help prevent obesity and tooth problems. When breeding, avoid choosing only for the darkest coat; calm handling response, good parenting, and freedom from seizures or malocclusion are more important.
