Lilac

Lilac

Lilac is a soft grey to pinkish-grey color variety of the Mongolian gerbil. It is generally produced when a black-based coat is lightened by pink-eye dilution, creating a cooler, muted body color rather than the warm banding seen in golden agouti. Many lilac gerbils have ruby or red-toned eyes, and the variety may also occur as lilac pied or lilac spotted when white-pattern genes are present. The exact shade can vary with line, age, and molt.

Lilac gerbils are managed like other domestic Mongolian gerbils and do not need special grooming or bathing beyond a clean sand bath. They thrive in pairs or settled groups, with deep substrate, dry housing, chew material, and a consistent small-rodent diet. Red-eyed individuals may squint in strong light, so a shaded retreat is sensible in any enclosure. When buying or breeding lilac gerbils, look past the pale coat for clear eyes, normal teeth, good movement, and a calm relationship with cage mates.
