Mixed Breed

A mixed-breed dog has ancestry from more than one breed, landrace, or unknown dog population rather than belonging to a closed pedigree breed. Some mixes have identifiable parent breeds, while others are several generations removed from any obvious source. Their appearance, size, coat, and behavior can be highly individual, which makes the label broad but still useful for dogs whose heritage is not fixed by a registry standard.

Care for a mixed-breed dog should begin with the actual dog in front of the owner. Adult size, energy level, coat type, sociability, and health history matter more than guesses based on color or head shape. DNA tests can offer clues, but they do not replace observation, veterinary care, and patient training. Shelters, rescues, and owners benefit from recording known background, behavior notes, and medical information so future care decisions are grounded in evidence.
