Markiesje
The Markiesje is a small Dutch companion dog, usually black, with a spaniel-like outline, feathering, and a bright, gentle expression. It is sometimes called the Dutch Tulip Hound in English-language references, though it is best understood as a companion breed from the Netherlands rather than a hunting hound. The breed is light, balanced, and people-focused, with enough animation to enjoy training and active household life.
Markiesjes suit owners who want a small dog that can be close with family and still engaged with the world. Many are playful without being frantic, provided they receive daily attention and kind structure. The feathered coat needs regular brushing around ears, legs, and tail, but it is not usually as demanding as a full-coated toy breed. Because the breed is uncommon outside Dutch circles, buyers should look for knowledgeable breeders, clear registration information, and health attention to eyes, patellas, and temperament. Early socialization helps the soft companion character stay confident.
