Galgo Español
The Galgo Español, or Spanish Galgo, is a Spanish sighthound developed for coursing hare across open countryside. It is often compared with the racing Greyhound, but many Galgos are longer in body, finer in frame, and built for stamina over rough ground rather than only short-track speed. The breed has a deep chest, high tuck-up, long tail, narrow head, and rose-shaped ears. Both smooth-coated and rough-coated Galgos occur, with many colors accepted in Spain.
In homes, the Galgo is usually gentle and quiet once exercised, but it remains a fast hunting dog with strong chase instinct. Secure fencing, careful leash handling, and gradual recall training matter more than heavy repetition. Thin skin and low body fat make soft bedding and cold-weather coats useful, especially for retired working dogs. Many Galgos are adopted through rescue groups after the Spanish hunting season, so adopters should ask about transport, health testing, fearfulness, and experience with cats or small pets before matching one to a household.
