How Long Do Ducks Live? Domestic Duck Lifespan by Breed and Care

Most pet ducks live about 8 to 12 years. That is the figure the Association of Avian Veterinarians gives owners in its client brochure on caring for ducks, and it is the most specific number this guide could verify from a veterinary body rather than from a care blog. Almost everything else you will read online, the confident tables of a lifespan for every breed, is not carried by any primary source that could be checked.

The honest version has two halves. A duck’s biology allows a long life: the mallard that nearly every domestic duck descends from has a recorded maximum longevity of 29.1 years in the AnAge longevity database. A duck’s circumstances usually decide a much shorter one. The gap between those two numbers is husbandry, and the sections below are ordered by how much of it each factor actually moves.

The most useful thing you can do on day one costs nothing: write the hatch date down. When a duck is due to lay, whether a limp is a bad day or a trend, how old the bird in the corner really is, all of it depends on a date somebody recorded. How long do ducks live?

Eight to twelve years is the working answer, and it comes from the Association of Avian Veterinarians, the professional body that publishes the peer reviewed Journal of Avian Medicine and Surgery. Its client education brochure on ducks, copyright 2019, states the average duck lifespan as 8 to 12 years and frames it as something to weigh before adding ducks to a family.

Be skeptical of anything more precise, including the breed by breed tables that dominate search results. This guide checked poultry and waterfowl extension at Cornell, Wisconsin and Kentucky, the Merck Veterinary Manual in both editions, the British Waterfowl Association and the RSPCA. None publishes a typical lifespan for a domestic duck at all, let alone one per breed. A number no primary source states, repeated confidently across a dozen sites, is not evidence.

The upper bound is better documented than the average. AnAge, the curated animal ageing database, lists a maximum longevity of 29.1 years for Anas platyrhynchos, the mallard, on a medium sample size rated acceptable quality, with no observations qualifying the entry. That is the outer edge of what the species has been recorded doing, not a target.

One record claim deserves a warning rather than a repetition. Several sites attribute an extraordinary duck longevity record to Guinness World Records. Every relevant page there returned a 200 response carrying a 23,494 byte “page not found” body, including a control page for a record known to exist, so the failure is bot blocking rather than absence. This guide states no record, and does not claim there is none.

Production life and natural life are different questions

If you searched this because you eat duck, the number you want is not a lifespan at all. The RSPCA reports that commercial meat ducks in the UK, predominantly Pekins, are caught for slaughter at around 3.1 kg to 3.5 kg, usually at around 42 to 56 days old. Cornell’s Duck Research Laboratory records the biology that makes that possible: Pekins reach roughly 90 percent of their adult weight at 7 weeks, and commercially grown birds commonly weigh 7 lb at that age.

That six to eight week window is a management decision, not a statement about how long a duck can live. It is the same distinction that separates a broiler chicken from a backyard hen, and it is why the two numbers people quote for ducks are so far apart. Both are true; they answer different questions.

Does breed change how long a duck lives?

Probably, but not in the way the internet says, and the sources will not support the specifics.

What is documented is what each type was selected to do. Poultry Extension records that the American Poultry Association sorts duck breeds into heavy, medium, lightweight and bantam classes, that around 90 percent of US duck meat comes from the Pekin, and that Pekins should not be raised past 10 weeks because feed efficiency falls sharply and pin feathers make plucking difficult. Cornell notes that the high output egg breeds, Khaki Campbell, Tsaiya and Indian Runner, are considerably smaller in body than meat type ducks while laying in excess of 230 and sometimes over 300 eggs a year.

So a heavy meat strain carries a body built to reach market weight in seven weeks, and a light laying strain carries an ovary running near capacity. Those are different animals with different failure modes, and the sections on legs and on laying cover the mechanisms each source names. What no source this guide could verify gives is a lifespan figure for either. The breed you choose changes which problems to watch for, not the number of years you are buying.

Water, honestly

This is where most duck advice goes wrong in both directions. Ducks do not need a pond. They do need water they can get their whole head into, and it has to be clean.

The welfare floor is specific. A peer reviewed review of welfare assessment for captive Anseriformes states that domestic duck welfare requires water troughs that enable complete immersion of the bird’s head, and that waterfowl kept without adequate bathing facilities develop poor plumage conditions that lead to chronic health problems. RSPCA Australia’s knowledgebase explains what that buys: ducks given open water, particularly sources giving full body coverage, have improved eye and nostril cleanliness, foot condition and plumage condition. It also reports that ducks prefer relatively shallow water, 10 to 30 cm, for bathing behaviour, the important factor being that they can immerse their heads to preen. Drinkers are provided separately, in addition to the bathing water.

The sources disagree above that floor, and the disagreement is worth seeing. The Association of Avian Veterinarians brochure says any domestic duck should have access to a pool or pond for swimming, and that most recommend a depth of at least 2 feet. University of Wisconsin Extension, writing about growing ducks, carries the opposite emphasis: swimming water is good exercise but is not essential, and pools or small ponds soil quickly, with rank water becoming detrimental if not flushed often. Those are less contradictory than they look once you notice the contexts, one about welfare over a long life and one about growing birds to market, but averaging them into a figure neither source states would be worse than showing both.

What both agree on is the part most owners get wrong: dirty water is worse than no pool. RSPCA Australia notes that contamination from litter, feed or faecal matter raises infectious disease risk, and that the fix is siting open water away from bedding, draining properly, and cleaning and changing it regularly. A tub you actually empty beats a pond you do not.

Two duck diseases make that concrete. Duck viral enteritis, also called duck plague, is most prevalent in domestic flocks with access to water also used by free living waterfowl, causes sudden death with a mortality rate Merck notes is particularly high among older ducks, and leaves recovered birds as latent carriers that shed the virus periodically. Botulism, older name western duck sickness, runs on the carcass and maggot cycle: a dead animal in or near the water grows the bacterium, fly larvae concentrate the toxin, and the next duck that eats them is poisoned. Merck’s control advice is unglamorous and effective. Collect and dispose of dead birds promptly.

Dry bedding, clean ground, and what follows damp

Ducks are wetter animals to keep than chickens, and the housing has to absorb that. University of Wisconsin Extension puts it plainly: litter dampness is more of a problem with ducks than with chicks, so management means removing wet spots and adding clean dry litter often, and keeping litter free of mould.

The mechanism behind that advice is precise, and it is not simply that damp is bad. Merck’s chapter on aspergillosis explains that allowing contaminated bedding to become wet and then dry creates a major risk, because moisture lets mould in the bedding sporulate and the subsequent drying lets the spores aerosolise when the litter is disturbed. Inadequate ventilation compounds it. In poultry the disease is primarily one of chickens and turkeys, but ducklings are named among the species affected, and severe outbreaks cluster in birds 7 to 40 days old. So this is mostly a risk to young stock, which is exactly the age at which losses are easiest to miss.

Space is the other half. The Merck Veterinary Manual’s professional guidance on backyard poultry gives ducks and geese roughly 3 to 6 square feet inside and 15 to 18 square feet in the run per bird, against 1.5 to 2 and 8 to 10 for laying hens. Ducks need materially more room than the chicken numbers most coop plans are built around. Merck also notes that high ammonia concentrations cause footpad dermatitis and corneal burns, and that adequate ventilation is what removes moisture from bedding in the first place.

Feet and legs

Foot problems make a duck’s life shorter and harder, and the fix is mostly ground. The Association of Avian Veterinarians advises that hard surfaces such as concrete be avoided because they contribute to foot sores, that grass and dirt surfaces are best, and that dirt be turned over or re-sodded once or twice a month depending on enclosure size to stop parasites and bacteria building up. It is blunt about the indoor version too: ducks kept indoors are very prone to developing foot sores and nutritional deficiencies, and keeping them solely inside is not generally recommended because they need softer ground and water to swim in.

The signs that brochure tells owners to call a veterinarian about are worth memorising, and three are foot and leg signs: limping, swollen or reddened feet, decreased appetite, lethargy, tail bobbing when breathing, sneezing or nasal discharge. A limp lasting more than a day or two is a veterinary problem, not a wait and see.

Heavy laying ducks carry a skeletal risk as well. Merck records cage layer fatigue, an osteoporosis in which birds become unable to stand and bones turn brittle, as common in chickens, Coturnix quail and Khaki Campbell ducks in confinement housing, with good nutrition and enough exercise to build cortical bone before lay begins as the protective factors. What laying costs a duck

Ducks out lay chickens. Poultry Extension, writing from the University of Kentucky, reports that commercial chickens lay about 250 eggs a year while commercial ducks can lay 300 to 350. Poultry Extension’s breed guide adds that a Runner typically lays four eggs a week for about eight months, with some utility strains passing 300 in a year.

That output has a documented cost in the reproductive tract. Merck records salpingitis, inflammation of the oviduct, as a frequent lesion in female broilers and ducks at processing, and notes that as the oviduct becomes non functional the ovaries usually atrophy. Egg yolk peritonitis, where yolk is deposited into the body cavity and then seeds a bacterial infection, is described as a common cause of sporadic death in laying and breeder birds, sometimes becoming the major cause of death in a flock, with antimicrobial treatment usually ineffective and diagnosis made at necropsy. Internal laying, Merck adds, has no known control or treatment.

Two honest caveats. Merck’s detailed flock data for egg peritonitis and internal laying comes from chicken layer and breeder flocks; the duck specific line in that chapter is the salpingitis one. And this guide found no published age curve for duck laying decline comparable to the well documented chicken curve, so it does not offer one. What the sources do support is the shape: high sustained output, a reproductive tract that is a real site of disease, and a condition mostly found after death rather than before it.

Drakes and the ratio question

The mechanism is peer reviewed. The Anseriformes welfare review lists an appropriate sex ratio among the core welfare requirements for dabbling ducks and says exactly what it is for, to reduce or remove female harassment. Drakes injuring hens during mating is a documented welfare problem.

The numbers were published for a different purpose, and they are repeated here only as their source states them. The FAO’s Science, Technology and Innovation Portal hosts Duck keeping in the tropics, a smallholder manual produced by the Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation, which gives one drake to six female ducks in meat type ducks and says fewer than four female ducks per drake is not recommended. That is written as a fertility recommendation, aimed at getting enough fertile eggs, not as a threshold below which hens get hurt. The same manual observes that a relatively large number of drakes makes the whole flock restless.

So if you keep drakes, more hens per drake is the direction the sources point, and a restless flock or a hen with a bare or damaged head and neck is the sign to act on. The Association of Avian Veterinarians adds the general form, that overcrowding increases the risk of aggression and injury. Nobody has published an injury threshold ratio, so treat a specific number quoted at you as folklore.

Predators, without the false precision

Predator loss is real and worth building against. It is also where duck writing invents the most confident statistics.

Here is what a primary source will support. Merck states that trauma is the most common problem affecting backyard poultry and lists predator injury alongside limb entrapment, cannibalism and crushing. Read the scope carefully: that ranks problems seen across backyard poultry as a group, not causes of death, and not in ducks specifically. This guide could not source a ranked leading cause of death for domestic ducks, and necropsy series systematically under-record predation because a bird carried off is never submitted. So no ranking is offered here.

The construction advice is sourceable and is what matters anyway. Merck advises fencing sunk at least 30 cm, about 12 inches, into the ground against animals that dig, fences as high as possible or electrified top and bottom, and a covered enclosure top against predators that fly or climb. The Association of Avian Veterinarians recommends netting over ponds and, where the habitat is not enclosed, a pen or run plus planted cover giving ducks somewhere to hide and to sleep at night. Ducks left on open ground overnight without a closed house is the most common gap.

Muscovies are a different species

Worth knowing before you generalise anything above. The Association of Avian Veterinarians notes that with the notable exception of the Muscovy, most domestic duck breeds descend from the mallard. The Muscovy is Cairina moschata, a separate species, and the practical differences show up immediately: Poultry Extension records a 35 day incubation against 28 for other ducks, drakes reaching 10 to 12 pounds against females at 5 to 6, and Muscovy crosses that are sterile. On longevity specifically, this guide has nothing sourced to offer. AnAge has no Cairina moschata entry at all, verified against a working control, so the widely repeated claim that Muscovies outlive other domestic ducks is not something this guide can support or refute. The records that actually change the outcome

Nothing above works without dates. Every lifespan lever in this guide is a trend rather than an event: a limp that recurs, a hen that stops laying earlier each year, a weight that drifts, a flock that keeps losing birds on the same fence line. One observation cannot show you any of that.

What is the single highest value thing I can change?
Close them in a predator proof house every night, keep the bedding dry, and keep the bathing water clean and away from the bedding. Those three cover most of what the sources document as killing ducks.
