Australorp Bantam
The Australorp Bantam is the small form of the Australian Australorp, carrying the breed's rounded body, single comb, and clean black, blue, or white plumage in a compact bird. It is kept mainly for exhibition, rare-breed interest, and small backyard flocks where full-sized heavy chickens may be less practical. The bantam should still look like an Australorp, not simply like any small black chicken.
For owners, Australorp Bantams are easier to house than large fowl but still need predator-proof runs, dry litter, and enough space to avoid bullying. Their eggs are smaller, though hens can be useful layers for a household. Breeders should protect the breed outline, feather quality, leg strength, and vigor, since bantam selection can drift toward cuteness at the expense of function. They are a good example of why size labels matter when comparing productivity, housing needs, and show standards.
