Valkyrie Icelandic

Valkyrie Icelandic, run by Laura Benson out of Duvall, Washington, focuses on Icelandic horses with a depth of hands-on expertise that sets it apart from most programs offering Icelandic horses for sale in Washington state. Laura — known as Lala — became the first American to graduate from Holar University in Iceland, the only equine science bachelor's degree program dedicated specifically to the breeding, management, instruction, and training of the Icelandic horse, and upon graduating she received the high-point award for best horsemanship.

Her foundation in the breed runs deep. She trained under celebrated Icelandic horseman Guðmar Pétursson and worked alongside other acclaimed figures in Iceland before returning to the United States to build her program. The horses at Valkyrie Icelandic include animals bred on-site as well as imports sourced directly from Iceland, with bloodlines selected for five-gaited ability and gait quality. The program's own-bred mare Solsticia, a daughter of Týr frá Árbakka and Rimma frá Saurbæ, was noted for her pace scores, reflecting the program's attention to gait genetics.

Training at Valkyrie Icelandic is built around classical dressage principles adapted to preserve the natural movement and spirit of the Icelandic horse — an approach Laura developed under the name Gæðinga Dressage. Located about 30 miles northeast of Seattle in the Snoqualmie Valley foothills, the program draws competitors and enthusiasts from across the Pacific Northwest.
