Surti
The Surti is an Indian river-type water buffalo breed from Gujarat, especially the Charotar and surrounding areas between the Mahi and Sabarmati rivers. It is generally medium-sized, with a compact body, wedge-shaped barrel, and sickle-shaped horns that curve downward and backward. Coat color is usually black or brownish black, and many animals show white markings on the forehead, tail switch, or lower legs. The breed is kept mainly for milk, with fat-rich production suited to household and regional dairy use.
Surti buffalo do best with steady access to water, shade, green fodder, and clean milking routines. They may suit small farms better than very large buffalo breeds because of moderate size and manageable feed demand, but milk yield still depends on nutrition, lactation stage, and udder health. Breeders should select for fertility, teat placement, disease resistance, and true Surti type rather than just horn shape. Buyers should ask about milk records, calving history, and whether animals come from maintained Gujarat lines or mixed buffalo stock.
