Mixed Breed
Mixed breed water buffalo is an informal description for domestic buffalo of blended or uncertain ancestry rather than a defined breed. These animals may carry river buffalo, swamp buffalo, regional landrace, or commercial dairy influence, and their size, horn shape, udder quality, and growth rate can vary widely. Most are black, gray-black, or dark brown, sometimes with white on the face or legs. The label is common in small farms, rescues, and areas where buffalo have been traded without formal herd books.
A mixed breed buffalo can be a practical farm animal, but selection has to be individual. For milk, check the cow's actual yield, udder structure, and behavior in the parlor; for meat or draft, sound feet, bone, and disposition matter more. New keepers should remember that water buffalo are not managed exactly like beef cattle: they are powerful, social, heat-sensitive animals that need secure fencing, slow handling, and dependable access to shade and water for cooling.
