Mediterranean
Mediterranean water buffalo usually refers to the Italian Mediterranean buffalo, a river-type dairy breed developed from buffalo populations established around the Mediterranean centuries ago. It is most closely associated today with Italy and the milk used for mozzarella di bufala. Animals are typically black or dark gray, medium to large, compact and deep-bodied, with a broad muzzle, swept horns, and dairy udders selected for regular milking. The milk is valued for high butterfat and protein compared with typical cow milk.
Modern Mediterranean buffalo herds are managed much like specialized dairy cattle herds, with added attention to cooling and calm handling. They need consistent forage, water, mineral balance, clean loafing areas, and shade or wet areas during heat. Milking routines work best when animals are trained patiently, because buffalo can resist rough or rushed handling. Buyers should look for documented milk records, reproductive history, udder soundness, and local adaptation, especially when animals are moved into colder or drier climates than the breed's usual dairy regions.
