Jafarabadi

Jafarabadi is a large river-type water buffalo breed from the Saurashtra region of Gujarat, India, especially around Jafarabad and neighboring districts. It is usually jet black, heavy-bodied, and deep through the barrel, with a broad head and massive horns that sweep downward beside the face before curling back or upward. The breed is associated with dairy production as well as strength for work, and mature animals can be noticeably larger and more imposing than many other Indian buffalo breeds.

Jafarabadi buffalo are kept by dairy farmers who value high-volume, high-solids milk, but their size means handling facilities, stalls, transport, and gates must be built for more than ordinary cattle. Horn shape also affects space at feeders and in yards. In hot weather they need reliable cooling through shade, bathing, sprinklers, or wallow access. Breeding herds benefit from careful selection for udder quality, fertility, feet and legs, and manageable temperament, since very large animals that are hard to milk or move can be costly in small operations.
