Mixed Breed
A mixed breed turkey is a domestic turkey with parents from different breeds, color varieties, or production strains. These birds may show almost any plumage, from bronze and black with a green sheen to slate, buff, red, chocolate, or pied patterns. Because mixed breed is not a standardized breed name, mature size, growth rate, fertility, and temperament can vary widely. A cross between heritage turkeys is very different from a bird carrying broad-breasted commercial ancestry.
Mixed turkeys are common in backyard flocks, small farms, rescues, and informal breeding groups. They can be useful table birds or personable flock animals, but buyers should ask about parent stock, age, expected adult weight, and whether the birds are capable of natural mating. Heavy commercial crosses may need closer attention to leg health and body condition. For breeding, avoid repeated close matings and keep only sound, active birds. Care should prioritize warm brooding for poults, secure housing at night, and clean ground or rotated range.
