Dumbo Ear
Dumbo ear rats are domestic fancy rats identified by their large, round ears set lower on the sides of the head than the usual top-set ear. The name comes from the cartoon elephant likeness, but the animals are ordinary Rattus norvegicus domestica with an ear-placement variety rather than a separate breed. Dumbo ears can be paired with standard coats, rex coats, satin coats, hairless lines, and nearly any color or marking, including hooded, berkshire, Irish, black, blue, champagne, and albino. The look often makes the head seem broader and softer, but it does not reliably predict personality.
Daily care, housing, and feeding are the same as for other pet rats: they are social animals best kept with compatible same-sex or neutered companions, a roomy ventilated cage, varied enrichment, and a balanced rat diet. The dumbo trait is commonly treated as recessive in breeding programs, so standard-eared parents may carry it without showing it. Buyers should look past ear shape and ask about age, sexing, respiratory history, handling, and the temperament of the family line. In rescues, dumbo rats are assessed like any other rat, with ear size mainly serving as an identification feature.
