Cluj-Napoca Blue

The Cluj-Napoca blue is a Romanian domestic pigeon variety named for Cluj-Napoca, the Transylvanian city where it was developed or maintained by local fanciers. It is often listed as a regional fancy or flying pigeon rather than a heavy utility breed, and the blue name points to the traditional blue coloration, often with bar or checker expression depending on the line. As with many regional East European pigeons, detailed standards outside its home area can be hard to find, so body type and performance descriptions may vary.

For keepers, the breed should be approached as an active local pigeon: provide a dry loft, steady trap training, and regular exercise before allowing long free flights. Selection usually balances the expected blue appearance with sound wings, orientation, fertility, and calm handling. Prospective buyers should ask for the Romanian or club standard used by the breeder and, if the birds are sold as performers, evidence of how they fly. Maintaining such regional breeds depends on honest strain records and avoiding casual crossbreeding.
