Hypo

Trait

Hypo in leopard geckos refers to reduced dark spotting on the body, often combined with yellow, orange, or tangerine color. In common breeder use, a hypo has fewer body spots than a normal leopard gecko, while super hypo is used for animals with no body spots. Tail spots, head spots, and color intensity can still vary widely between lines.

Hypo leopard geckos are managed like other leopard geckos, with reliable heat, secure hides, a humid shedding area, calcium support, and appropriately sized insects. The practical breeding issue is consistency: hypo expression is often line-bred and can be influenced by the other morphs present. Buyers should look at adult examples and parent photos, because juvenile spotting can change significantly as the gecko grows.

How Hypo works

Built by selecting breeders over generations, not a single gene, so there is no het, super or pairing odds, and looks vary.

One reference lists Hypo as polygenic. Breeder sources define it by appearance, a gecko with few body spots, without naming how it is inherited, and there is no official spot count.

Leopard Gecko Care: Enclosure, Heat, UVB, Feeding, and Shedding

A leopard gecko comes out at dusk, lives on the ground rather than in branches, closes its eyes with real eyelids, and takes most of its body heat from whatever it is lying on. Nearly every care decision follows from those four facts, and most advice online ignores at least one. Three pillars of the […]

How Long Do Leopard Geckos Live? Lifespan, Aging, and Records

Veterinary references place leopard gecko longevity around 20 years in captivity, and a well-documented animal can reach or exceed 20. The Royal Veterinary College says up to 20 years, Merck lists 20-plus, and the University of Montreal veterinary hospital gives a 20-year captive average. Those are planning references, not a guarantee. Date of hatch, lifelong […]
