African

The African goose is a heavy domestic goose breed with swan-goose influence, recognized by its upright carriage, prominent knob, deep body, and often a dewlap under the throat. Brown, buff, and white varieties may be seen depending on registry. Despite the name, the breed is not simply a goose from Africa; it is a long-established domestic type developed through trade and breeding history.

African geese are kept for meat, exhibition, flock guarding, and farm presence. Their size calls for good footing, roomy housing, and water deep enough for bathing and breeding behavior. Knobs and dewlaps can be vulnerable to frostbite in cold climates, so winter shelter matters. Breeders should watch fertility, leg strength, and temperament, because a large goose that is difficult to handle or too heavy to breed well is less useful than a balanced bird.
