Austrian Landrace
The Austrian landrace is a traditional domestic goose population shaped by Austrian farm use rather than by a single commercial breeding program. In German-speaking contexts it may be called an Austrian country goose or Osterreichische Landgans. These are greylag-derived geese kept for grazing, seasonal eggs, goslings, and table production, usually with a medium body, hardy constitution, and more variation than a narrow show breed. White, grey, pied, and saddleback markings may occur by flock.
Small farms value this kind of goose for efficient pasture use, brooding ability, and tolerance of Central Europe's wet springs and cold winters. Selection tends to be practical: sound legs, reliable fertility, strong goslings, and parents that guard young without becoming impossible to handle. A buyer should ask whether the birds come from a recognized conservation program or a family flock using the regional name, because size, color, and productivity can differ noticeably between lines.
