Toulouse

The Toulouse goose is a prominent breed that originated in France, distinguished by its substantial size and gentle demeanor. Renowned for its soft, grayish plumage with a distinctive white underbelly, the Toulouse offers a striking presence in any flock. There are two main types of Toulouse geese: the production type, commonly raised for its impressive egg-laying capabilities and rapid growth, and the dewlap variety, which is appreciated for its ornamental appearance and is often seen in exhibitions.

Characterized by a rounded body, wide frame, and soft, fluffy chest, the Toulouse goose is also noted for its striking orange beak and legs. This breed is particularly well-regarded for its quiet and calm temperament, making it a good choice for small farms and hobbyists looking for friendly, manageable birds. Due to their heavy build, Toulouse geese are less inclined to fly and are, therefore, easier to contain within a designated area.

These geese have a long history of being bred for their meat, liver, and fat, with the dewlap Toulouse being specifically selected for the production of foie gras. Despite their somewhat slow-witted nature compared to other more agile geese, Toulouse geese are cherished for their docile nature and their contribution to both poultry production and pastoral life.
