Lionhead

A lionhead goldfish is a Chinese fancy form of Carassius auratus shaped around two traits: a smooth back with no dorsal fin and a heavy headgrowth, or wen, over the crown, cheeks, and gill plates. Its body is short and rounded, ending in a paired tail that should sit neatly behind the fish rather than trail like a comet's. Lionheads helped influence later dorsal-less varieties such as the ranchu, but many strains keep a fuller, more squared head and a less sharply arched back. They occur in red, red-and-white, black, calico, chocolate, and other goldfish colors.

That compact shape makes lionheads slower than single-tailed goldfish and less suited to strong pond currents or tall aquariums where they must work hard to feed. A mature fish needs ample floor space, excellent filtration, and food that does not leave it gulping at the surface; gel foods, soaked pellets, and varied greens are common choices. The wen can trap debris or grow over the eyes, so keepers watch for inflammation and make sure the fish is competing successfully at meals. Breeding programs select for a balanced back, symmetrical tail, and headgrowth that looks full without compromising breathing or sight.
