Swedish

Swedish ducks are medium-heavy domestic ducks of Scandinavian and northern European origin, best known through the blue-bibbed birds often called Blue Swedish. The breed has a broad body, a fairly calm manner, and a characteristic white bib on the chest; depending on color genetics and registry language, flocks may include blue, black, splash or silver, and other related shades. They were kept historically as practical farm ducks for meat, eggs, and hardiness rather than as a purely ornamental breed.

For backyard and small-farm keepers, Swedish ducks are usually straightforward, pasture-friendly birds that need predator-safe shelter at night, clean drinking and bathing water, and feed that supports growth or laying. Their blue color does not breed completely true, so a Blue Swedish mating can produce black, blue, and pale splash offspring. Breeders who want standard birds pay attention to the clean bib, body depth, size, and leg color, rather than only to whether the duck looks generally blue.
