Pekin

Pekin ducks are large white domestic ducks developed from Chinese stock and exported widely in the 19th century. In North America, Pekin usually refers to the American Pekin, while German Pekins have a more upright carriage and are treated separately by some breeders. The familiar bird has cream-white plumage, an orange bill and legs, a broad body, rapid growth, and a steady supply of large eggs, though hens are not usually dependable sitters. Many commercial meat ducks are Pekin-based or Pekin-influenced strains.

The same fast growth that makes Pekins useful also shapes their care. Ducklings need a waterfowl-appropriate starter with adequate niacin, and adults benefit from room to walk, clean bathing water, dry bedding, and non-slip surfaces. Overfeeding can make heavy birds uncomfortable, especially in hot weather or on hard ground. Exhibition breeders select for carriage, size, clear white feathering, and correct bill color, while backyard buyers may be choosing among show lines, production strains, hatchery birds, and rescues with very different mature weights.
