Mulard

The mulard, often spelled moulard, is a hybrid duck produced by crossing a Muscovy drake with a mallard-derived domestic duck hen, commonly a Pekin. It is a mule duck rather than a true breeding breed, and most mulards are sterile. The cross is valued for fast growth, a heavy body, and leaner meat than many standard domestic ducks. Plumage varies with the parent stock, from mostly white to pied, gray, black, or buff-marked birds. The reverse cross, using a domestic duck drake and Muscovy female, is usually called a hinny duck and is less common in production.

Mulards are raised commercially for meat and, in some regions, foie gras, though welfare rules and public acceptance differ by place. Small farms and homesteads may keep them as terminal meat birds or long-lived nonbreeding flock members. Their size calls for dry bedding, firm footing, shade in hot weather, and feed management that supports growth without encouraging leg strain. Since they do not reproduce true, new stock must come from planned parent flocks or hatcheries.

How Much Does a Duck Cost? Ducklings, Adults, and the Real Budget

In small orders (the quantity most backyard keepers buy), common breed ducklings like Pekin and Khaki Campbell run roughly $10 to $15 apiece; the widely quoted $7 figure is a bulk price that only kicks in at large quantities. Rare or show breeds cost several times that, though the sellers price them one way each […]

What Do Ducks Eat? Feed, Foraging, and What to Never Give

Ducks eat a complete formulated waterfowl or all flock feed as the base of the diet, plus whatever they find foraging: green plants, insects, snails, slugs, and pond life. Around that base they will happily take greens and vegetable scraps, and they need clean water available whenever they eat. The base ration changes twice in […]

How Long Do Ducks Live? Domestic Duck Lifespan by Breed and Care

Most pet ducks live about 8 to 12 years. That is the figure the Association of Avian Veterinarians gives owners in its client brochure on caring for ducks, and it is the most specific number this guide could verify from a veterinary body rather than from a care blog. Almost everything else you will read […]
