Molossus
The Molossus is best understood as a historical dog type associated with ancient Epirus and the Molossian people, not as a single modern breed with a closed registry. Classical references and later breed histories connect molossian dogs with large guardians, war dogs, and livestock-protection types, though exact appearance is difficult to reconstruct. The name now often serves as a root concept for mastiff-like and mountain guardian breeds.
Modern use of Molossus should be handled carefully because many living breeds claim some connection to ancient molossers. For historians, breeders, and enthusiasts, the value is in tracing how large guardian dogs were described, traded, and adapted across regions. It is not a normal pet-shopping category on its own. When a dog is advertised simply as a Molossus, buyers should ask whether the seller means a historical reconstruction, a modern Greek line, or a broad mastiff type.
