Kangal Shepherd
The Kangal Shepherd, or Kangal Coban Kopegi, is a large Turkish livestock guardian most closely associated with the Sivas region and the town of Kangal. It has a short, dense fawn to dun coat, a dark mask, a broad head, and a calm but watchful manner around its flock. The breed was developed to live with sheep and goats and deter predators through presence, judgment, and force when necessary, rather than to herd stock like a collie.
Kangals need secure fencing, early social exposure, and handlers who respect an independent guardian temperament. They can be steady family dogs in suitable homes, but they are powerful, territorial, and often unsuitable for casual urban ownership. Puppies should be chosen from health-tested, temperamentally stable parents, especially where the name overlaps with Anatolian Shepherd lines in some registries. Working homes also need to raise young dogs carefully with livestock so protective instincts develop without roughness or chasing.
