Istrian Shorthaired Hound
Smooth-coated and white with orange markings, the Istrian Shorthaired Hound is a Croatian scent hound from the Istrian peninsula. It is sometimes listed as the Istarski kratkodlaki gonic and is considered one of the old regional hounds of the eastern Adriatic. The breed is medium-sized, clean in outline, and built for endurance over limestone, scrub, and farmland. It hunts mainly by scent for hare and fox, using a clear voice to keep the hunter informed as it works.
Most examples are best understood as working dogs. They need long exercise, access to scent-based activity, and secure areas where following a trail will not put them on roads or livestock. Training should put time into recall, leash manners, and calm behavior around other animals, while accepting that independent trail work is part of the breed's purpose. The short coat is low maintenance, but ears, pads, and skin should be checked after hunting or rough-country walks. Outside Croatia and neighboring countries, buyers may find very few litters.
