It is a sensible commitment window, not a promise that every gecko will reach 20 or stop there. Why 15 to 20 years is the honest answer
The University of Montreal Veterinary Teaching Hospital gives a 15-to-20-year captive lifespan. Texas A&M Veterinary Medicine publishes the same range.
Survival beyond 20 is plausible, but the evidence base has an unusual limitation. A peer-reviewed 2020 field paper records the species’ rediscovery on Ile des Pins in 1994. A 2024 peer-reviewed veterinary study describes crested geckos as common in the United States pet trade while noting limited published physiology and nutrition research, documenting that captive use and research expanded after rediscovery.
It is therefore reasonable to infer that this modern evidence window contains fewer complete, verifiable hatch-to-death records than one might expect for species with centuries of documented captive history. That is an inference from the dated rediscovery and subsequent captive establishment, not a measured comparison or proof of a maximum lifespan.
That history does not prove a 25- or 30-year average. It means keepers should preserve long records and treat 20 as neither a guarantee nor a hard biological ceiling. Outlier anecdotes without verified hatch and death dates are not used in the opening answer.
Life stages and visible change
Hatchling: record hatch date, parentage when known, first weight, pattern and color images, initial feeding, early sheds, source, and any incubation history provided by the breeder.
Juvenile: growth rate varies with genetics, nutrition, environment, sex, and health. Do not assign age from one weight chart. Track gram weights and body profile under comparable conditions, plus climbing, jumping, feeding response, and sheds.
Mature adult: external appearance may remain similar for years. Stable activity, grip, route use, appetite, body condition, stools, reproduction, and environment form a useful baseline. Record tail loss or other injury as an event, not as an age marker.
Older adult: no authoritative universal senior birthday was identified for this build. Combine documented age with function. A new fall, grip change, weight drift, repeated incomplete shed, reduced appetite, altered posture, or failure to use normal routes should not be dismissed as old age.

The comparison uses separate habitat bays. It is not a cohabitation recommendation. Housing decisions belong in the complete care plan and should account for sex, age, reproductive risk, individual behavior, and current veterinary guidance.
Tail loss belongs in the lifetime record
Crested geckos can drop the tail, and unlike many lizards they do not grow it back. A peer-reviewed genome paper identifies C. ciliatus as one of the geckos that cannot regenerate a lost tail.
A long-healed tailless adult can function well. Tail loss is not proof of old age, a short life, or current illness. Record the date, trigger if known, wound assessment, healing, activity, body weight, habitat changes, and later veterinary findings. Seek prompt veterinary care for active bleeding, swelling, discharge, tissue damage, or a change in function.
Do not handle by the tail. Preserve a pre-loss photograph if available, but do not stage repeated handling merely to document appearance.

Longevity mechanisms worth logging
Arboreal access changes with function
Record the branches, hides, platforms, and routes the gecko actually uses. Stable broad routes and cover allow choice. If an older animal begins missing jumps or avoiding height, lower-risk routes can be added while a veterinarian assesses grip, vision, pain, condition, and neurologic function.
Temperature is measured, not assumed
A peer-reviewed thermoregulation study found that crested geckos actively selected temperatures associated with performance. It does not provide a lifespan formula. It supports measuring the available gradient and recording seasonal shifts, equipment changes, and heat events rather than calling one room temperature universally suitable.
Moisture needs a cycle and ventilation
Record measured humidity, misting, ventilation, drinking observations, sheds, condensation, and mold or sanitation problems. Constant saturation and prolonged dryness are different risks. Veterinary husbandry guidance holds the target pattern; the lifespan record holds what actually happened.
Nutrition needs an exact product history
Log the complete diet brand and formula, batch changes, preparation, amount offered, leftovers, insects if used, supplements if prescribed, appetite, and weight response. “Gecko food” is not enough to reconstruct a decade of nutrition.
A normal exam creates a baseline
A reptile veterinarian can interpret mouth, eyes, skin, crest, toes, grip, skeleton, abdomen, body condition, tail status, fecal findings, reproductive history, environment, and nutrition together. The first well-animal exam makes later change easier to interpret.
Estimating an unknown age
Exact adult age cannot be read from size, color intensity, crest height, head width, toe pads, tail presence, or weight. Firing up or down changes color, morphs vary, tails can be lost at any age, and growth history differs.
Build an auditable range:
- Find the earliest dated photograph, receipt, listing, message, breeder record, transfer file, or veterinary note.
- Decide whether the gecko was clearly a hatchling, growing juvenile, or adult at that time.
- Preserve tail status, sex if confirmed, breeding history, and major health events from the same period.
- Use “adult by August 2017” rather than inventing a hatch day.
- Keep the word “estimated” attached to the date everywhere it is copied.
An honest lower bound is more useful than a precise-looking guess.
Warning signs are not senior traits
Seek a reptile veterinarian for rapid weight loss, persistent refusal of food, repeated falls, inability to grip or climb, marked weakness, tremors, abnormal limbs or jaw, swollen joints, eye cloudiness or discharge, breathing effort, mouth swelling, repeated vomiting, persistent diarrhea, blood, prolapse, severe abdominal swelling, egg-laying difficulty, a growing mass, active tail-base injury, or collapse.
Do not diagnose metabolic bone disease, infection, parasites, impaction, reproductive disease, kidney disease, gout, cancer, or vitamin imbalance from a list. Bring the weight and appetite trends, complete diet and supplement record, environment measurements, shed and stool history, reproduction, tail event, and safe video of movement.
A gecko may be less active during parts of its daily cycle. The concern is a new, persistent, or progressive departure from its own pattern, especially when physical signs accompany it.
