Sussex
Sussex cattle are an old red beef breed from the Weald and neighboring counties of south-eastern England, especially Sussex, Kent, and Surrey. They developed as sturdy draught and beef animals before mechanization, then shifted into a pasture-based suckler and beef role. The classic Sussex is deep red to red-brown, medium to large framed, broad through the body, and strong on its feet. Some lines are horned while polled genetics are also used, depending on registry and breeding program.
On farms, Sussex are most often kept for grass-fed or forage-based beef, either purebred or as maternal cows in commercial systems. They tend to suit temperate pasture, rotational grazing, and outdoor calving where shelter and good mineral nutrition are available. Selection usually emphasizes fertility, longevity, structural soundness, and calves that finish without excessive grain. Buyers comparing Sussex cattle should look beyond color to cow families, calving records, docility, and whether the herd has been selected for the local climate and market.
