Droughtmaster
The Droughtmaster is an Australian tropical beef breed developed in Queensland from Brahman and British cattle, especially Shorthorn-influenced lines. It was selected for cattle stations where heat, drought, parasites, and long distances to water made many temperate breeds difficult to manage. Droughtmasters are commonly red, golden red, or honey colored, with a short coat, loose skin, moderate hump influence, and a practical beef frame. Many are polled, though horn status depends on the line.
In commercial herds, Droughtmasters are valued for fertility, calf survival, walking ability, and acceptable carcass performance under northern Australian and similar subtropical conditions. They can use rough pasture efficiently, but they still need reliable water, mineral support, and sensible stocking rates during dry seasons. When selecting breeding animals, producers often pay close attention to temperament, sheath and navel structure in bulls, udder quality in females, and whether the line has been proven in comparable tick and heat pressure.
