Gloster Canary

Gloster Canary

The Gloster canary is a small English type canary developed in the twentieth century and bred for a rounded, compact outline. It comes in two forms: the corona, which has a circular crest, and the consort, which has a plain head with the same broad shape. Glosters appear in green, cinnamon, blue, clear yellow, clear buff, and variegated patterns. They are not song canaries in the specialist sense, though many males sing well in a household setting.

Breeding Glosters requires attention to the crest gene as well as general canary health. Corona birds are normally paired with consorts rather than with other coronas, because doubling the crest trait can reduce hatchability and produce poor feathering. A good crest should be tidy and should not block the eyes; pet birds with heavy head feather may need gentle monitoring so they can see food, water, and perches clearly. Their compact build makes weight control important, so flight space, bathing, and a steady diet with greens are useful alongside routine cage hygiene.
