German Roller Canary
The German roller canary is a domesticated song breed known in many bird rooms as the Harzer roller. It became established through German canary fanciers, especially in and around the Harz region, where birds were bred for a mellow interior song rather than showy plumage. The mature male's performance is quieter and more rounded than that of many common canaries, with rolling and flute passages valued by traditional judges. Yellow, white, and variegated birds are common, but a plain-looking roller may be the better singer.
Successful roller breeding depends on both inheritance and schooling. Chicks from strong song families still need an orderly sound environment, and young cocks may be trained with selected tutors before being assessed. Pet owners who want a singer should ask to hear the bird or its close male relatives, since females and immature birds are not reliable song purchases. Housing should be calm, bright, and well ventilated, with seasonal rest, bathing, and a balanced canary diet to keep the respiratory system and feather condition sound.
