Gloster Canary
The Gloster is a very small English canary bred in two forms. The Corona wears a neat round crest radiating from a single point on the crown, the bowl cut look most people picture, with the beak showing beneath it. The Consort has no crest at all, just a broad, smooth, heavily browed skull. Both are the same breed and both are shown, and the reason both exist is genetic: the crest gene is lethal in a double dose, so a Corona is always paired to a Consort and never to another Corona. What a Gloster canary actually is
A Gloster is a type canary, and that word has a specific meaning in the fancy. Type breeds are judged on shape, size, posture and feather quality; song breeds are judged on what comes out of the bird.
Like every domestic canary it descends from the wild Atlantic canary, Serinus canaria. What selection has done to it is shape: a small, short, cobby bird with a deep rounded chest, a short full neck, the back well filled with the wings tight against it, and a short closely folded tail. Round and solid rather than long and elegant, the opposite of what a Yorkshire is bred for. That shape also separates a Gloster from the other crested canaries: a large, slim, long bodied crested bird is a Crest or a Crestbred.
Corona and Consort, and how to tell them apart
A good Corona crest is a single flat cap of feather radiating evenly from one clear central point, unbroken all the way round, dropping just far enough over the forehead that the beak stays visible and the eye can still be seen. Think of a well cut fringe rather than a pom pom.
The Consort has no crest whatsoever. What it should have instead is a very broad, round, domed skull with a heavy ridge of brow feathering hanging over the eye. Breeders call that browiness, and it is the feature a Consort is most judged on.

New keepers assume the crested one is the real thing and the plain one is the leftover. In practice it is the other way round: the head width and body type that make good Coronas come up through the Consort side, so a stud with weak Consorts produces weak Coronas a generation later.
The crest gene, and why you never pair two Coronas
This is the part most pages about this breed skip or garble, so here it is carefully.
The crest is carried on a dominant gene. One copy is enough to grow a Corona. That is why pairing a Corona to a Consort gives roughly half crested chicks and half plain headed ones, which is exactly what Gloster breeders see season after season.
The problem is the chick that inherits a crest gene from both parents. In canaries the double dose is not a bigger crest. It is understood to disrupt the developing skull, and the consistent account across the fancy is that these embryos die in the shell or shortly after hatching. So a Corona to Corona pairing is expected to give a quarter dead, half Corona and a quarter Consort. You get no more live crested chicks than the safe pairing would have given you, and you lose a quarter of the clutch getting there.
The correct pairing is always Corona to Consort, in either direction. This is not a refinement or a house preference. It is the reason the Consort is a recognised form with its own standard rather than a byproduct. Consort to Consort is perfectly safe, since neither bird carries the crest gene, but it can only ever produce Consorts: a way to work on head width and body type, not a way to keep the crest in your line.
What a first time breeder should actually do. Set every pairing as one Corona and one Consort, with no exceptions, not even for a single round with a bird you like. Record which form each bird is before the breeding season opens, because a lightly crested young Corona and an unusually browy Consort can be hard to separate in nest feather, and the moment you are unsure you have lost the ability to pair safely. When you buy a bird in, ask which form it is and what its parents were, and write it down the same day.
Now the part that gets stated with more confidence than the evidence supports. The rule above is absolute. The genetics underneath it are less documented than the internet suggests.
No molecular study of the canary crest locus appears in the Online Mendelian Inheritance in Animals database, the catalogue of characterised genetic traits in domestic species: it carries eight canary entries and all eight are pigmentation or song. The 2023 whole genome study of canary varieties in Animal Genetics sequenced pigmentation too, not head feathering. So the mechanism is uncharacterised, and the familiar “one in four dies in the shell” figure is the textbook Mendelian expectation for a homozygous lethal, not a hatch failure rate measured in a canary trial.
Comparative work shows why that matters. In the domestic chicken, crest is a 197 base pair duplication in an intron of HOXC10, behaves as an incompletely dominant allele, and homozygotes are perfectly viable, though large crested breeds like the Polish carry an associated cerebral hernia. In ducks, crest involves incomplete closure of the skull and the outcome varies sharply by breed. The team that sequenced the Chinese crested duck genome reported better than 95 percent survival after hatching, because fatty tissue compensates for the gap, and set that against German crested ducks, which carry high mortality before and after hatching from the same incomplete closure. Crest is not one gene doing one thing across all birds, or even across all ducks.
None of that softens the advice, it sharpens the reason for it. The canary crest is a skull trait whose double dose has never been shown to be safe, and the price of testing it yourself is paid by the chicks.
There is a second lethal in this breed. Dominant white behaves the same way, and here the breed society is explicit. The International Gloster Breeders Association states in its breeding guide that pairing two dominant whites together “will result in 25% of the young dying” because the gene is lethal when present on both sides, and notes that fawn carries the dominant white gene too. So a dominant white Gloster is paired to a non white bird for the same reason a Corona is paired to a Consort, and breeding dominant white Coronas means managing two independent lethals in one pairing. Read the word dominant carefully. Recessive white is a separate allele with its own OMIA entry, not the gene the IGBA is describing, so ask a seller which white a bird carries.
Where the Gloster came from
The IGBA’s account of the breed’s origins puts the first steps around 1919, with Mrs Rogerson of Gloucestershire taking up canaries in 1920, a woman with, in the society’s words, “a firm belief that all things that were small were beautiful”. She paired crested Roller canaries with very small Borders from a breeder named J. H. Madagan, while John McLay in Scotland was independently pairing his smallest Crests to small Borders.
The public debut was the 1925 London National show, where two of Mrs Rogerson’s miniature crests were given a class of their own and took first and second. A. W. Smith, who had encouraged both breeders, proposed naming the bird after Mrs Rogerson’s home county, with the crested form called Corona and its plain headed partner Consort. The breed marked its centenary in 2025.
Clubs followed: the Gloster Fancy Canary Club at Cheltenham in 1932, the Southern club in 1953, the IGBA in 1966, the Gloster Convention in 1968. American adoption was slower, and the Watchbird history dates it to Margie McGee’s 1960 imports.
One correction worth making, because it circulates widely: the IGBA does not describe itself as the breed’s governing body. It calls itself the largest all Gloster society, which is a different claim. The breed is served by the IGBA, by regional UK clubs and by a Gloster Fancy Canary Council, with the standard in widest international use adopted by the COM in 2015.
How a Gloster is judged, and the size myth

The standard published by the Association of Gloster Breeders, adopted by the COM in 2015, opens by saying the bird is judged on a 100 point system. It then lists 20 for body, 15 for size, 10 each for plumage, carriage and condition, 5 each for tail and for legs and feet, and 20 for the head section, within which the crest itself is worth 5. A Consort is scored on the same sheet, with the head split 15 for the broad round skull and 5 for eyebrow. Add those up and they come to 95, and the document gives no total line to account for the missing 5. Work from the section weights rather than the round number in the opening sentence.
Now the widely repeated claim that needs correcting. You will read all over the web that the Gloster standard sets a maximum length of 4.75 inches or 12 cm. That number appears nowhere in the document linked above. Its entire wording on size is “tendency to the diminutive”, worth 15 points, which the Watchbird article glosses as meaning that all things being equal, the smaller bird is the better bird. The same writer adds the guard that stops that being misread: a small bird, or a small crested bird, is just a pretty little canary and not a Gloster. Size is a section of the scale, not a ruler at the show bench.
The contrast makes it clear. The Fife Canary Council standard does set a hard limit, “the bird’s length no greater than 108mm (4¼ Inches)”, so a Fife over the mark is out where a big Gloster is simply marked down.
Most Glosters do land around 4.5 to 4.75 inches, which is why the figure circulates, but that is the observed size of the breed, not a clause in the standard. Exhibition breeds mostly work this way, defined by a written standard and a scale of points rather than by measurement, the same system behind a Modena pigeon or an Archangel.
Colours, and what “blue” means here
IGBA show classes run through green, cinnamon, buff, yellow, grizzle, and the white and allied to white group (which includes fawn and blue), each divided again by how much dark pigment the bird carries. Red factor is not among those classes, so the deep red orange of a red factor canary is not a colour you will meet in this breed.
Two terms trip people up. Blue does not mean a blue bird: in canary shorthand a blue is a green bird on a white ground rather than a yellow one, and fawn is the same thing done to a cinnamon.
Buff and yellow describe feather texture, not colour, and this one matters for the bird’s health. A yellow feathered (or intensive) bird has smaller, tighter feathers with colour running to the edge; a buff feathered bird has larger, softer feathers with a paler frosted edge. Pair one of each: two yellows thin the feather out over generations and two buffs coarsen it. Coarse buff feathering in this breed is associated with feather cysts, so buff to yellow is not a show ring nicety, it is a welfare decision.
Song: what a Gloster actually sounds like
Glosters sing, and cocks sing well and often. What they do not do is sing to a judged standard, and the common claim that the Gloster’s song is a quiet warble gets the contrast backwards.
Type canaries descended from the Border, and the Gloster is one, sing what the fancy calls a chopper song: loud, bright, broken up, delivered with the beak open. A German Roller does the opposite, soft low rolling passages called tours with the beak nearly shut, scored tour by tour by a judge who listens without seeing the bird. The American Singer was bred to land in between.
Hens sing very little, and sexing by song is unreliable in young birds, so do not take a seller’s word on sex before a bird is in full song.
Keeping a Gloster well
Canaries fly rather than climb, and that single fact should drive every housing decision. Length is what a canary uses, so a long flight cage it can cross in a few wingbeats beats a tall one, and a round ornamental cage fails for having no straight run. Two things earn their place here rather than on the species page. Use untreated branches in clearly different diameters rather than matching dowels, and skip sandpaper perch covers. And offer a bath more often than Lafeber’s twice weekly minimum, because feather condition shows more in a crested bird than a plain one.
Diet. All seed diets are the commonest husbandry failure in this species. Merck’s passerine nutrition guidance sets out why: typical canary mixes are short on vitamins A, D3, E and K, poorly balanced for calcium and phosphorus, low in lysine and methionine, and fatty enough to cause obesity. A formulated pellet or pellet based mash makes a better base, with sprouted seed and greens alongside, and soluble grit such as oyster shell or cuttlebone for calcium around laying.
Health problems worth knowing about
Take any sick canary to a vet who sees birds. Small passerines hide illness until they are genuinely unwell, so a bird that looks fluffed and quiet is further along than it appears.
Feather cysts. This is the one that matters most for this breed, and the thing most Gloster pages leave out. A cyst forms when a growing feather fails to break through the skin and coils up inside the follicle. VCA’s veterinary summary lists Gloster, Norwich and Border canaries among the highest incidence birds, alongside several parrot species, and notes an apparent genetic link in canaries. Cysts are also strongly associated with coarse buff feathering, which is the practical reason for the buff to yellow pairing rule. Never try to remove one at home, since a damaged cyst bleeds heavily; VCA says bothersome, self traumatised or repeatedly infected cysts may need surgical removal by a vet. Ask whether a line has thrown cysts before you buy into it.
Crest overgrowth. Specific to Coronas. A heavy crest can drop far enough over the eyes to interfere with vision, which is why the standard asks for the eye to remain discernible. Watch that a pet Corona finds its food, water and perches without hesitation. If it cannot, that is a job for an avian vet, not household scissors.
The general canary list. Air sac mites, scaly leg, atoxoplasmosis, coccidiosis, pox, chlamydiosis, Macrorhabdus, obesity and egg binding are species problems rather than Gloster problems, and they live on the Creatures canary page. One is worth naming here: a bird that clicks, sneezes, bobs its tail or breathes open mouthed is showing the MSD Veterinary Manual signs of air sac mites, which is a vet visit rather than a wait and see. Lifespan, honestly
Lafeber’s clinical sheet gives 6 to 12 years for a captive canary, with reports up to about 15. You will often see “around ten years or more” quoted as the norm, which is optimistic: plenty of pet canaries die well short of it, from an all seed diet, a cage with no room to fly, or an untreated respiratory infection. Ten years is a realistic hope for a well kept Gloster, not a baseline.

What a Gloster canary costs
Glosters change hands privately, between hobbyists and at club shows, so there is no sale ring or published price series for anyone to average, and a precise national figure is invented. The shape of the market is what can be said honestly.
A pet quality Gloster from a hobby breeder costs more than a plain colour bred canary and considerably less than an exhibition bird. A closed ringed bird from an established show stud, with known parentage and a breeder who can tell you what the line has produced, costs several times that, and for a first canary you do not need one. Prices move with the season, since most birds become available after breeding.
One quirk is worth knowing before you shop. Coronas frequently ask more than Consorts, because pet buyers want the crest. From a breeder’s point of view that is backwards: you cannot produce Coronas without good Consorts. If you are buying a pair with any thought of breeding, do not let the price gap talk you into two crested birds.
