Butterfly
Butterfly bettas are domestic Betta splendens with a banded fin pattern that frames the fish in contrasting color. The body and inner fins are usually one color, while the outer edge of the fins is white, clear, or another sharply different shade; high-quality examples show an even rim on the caudal, dorsal, and anal fins. The butterfly pattern can occur alongside halfmoon, plakat, crowntail, dragon scale, marble, koi, and other betta lines, so it describes color placement, not fin shape.
Clean water and low-stress housing are especially important because ragged fin edges can spoil the crisp butterfly border and make injuries harder to judge. Males are normally kept singly, and breeding pairs need supervised introductions like other bettas. Pattern inheritance can be inconsistent: a well-marked butterfly may produce offspring with broken bands, solid fins, or marble changes over time. When choosing one, look for active swimming, intact rays, and a balanced body rather than only the outer fin color.
