Monarch is a recessive ball python color gene. A snake needs two copies to show it. One reference groups it with Ultramel, but whether the two are alleles has not been shown. Bred to a normal, every baby is a het that looks normal.
Ball pythons show Monarch only with two copies. One copy makes a het, which looks normal but can pass Monarch on.
One reference groups Monarch with Ultramel; the other does not, and a 2022 genetic study notes that allelism with Ultramel is unproven, so no locus is set.
Example: het × het gives about 1 in 4 Monarch per egg (1/4).
